Cataract Lens Types in India - Which Lens Is Right for You?

During cataract surgery, the cloudy natural lens is replaced with an artificial one. This short explains the main types of intraocular lenses (IOLs) available and how a choice is made.

Types of intraocular lenses

The artificial lens placed in your eye is called an intraocular lens, or IOL. Several types are available.

  • Monofocal lenses. These are a standard type of lens. They are set to provide clear vision at a single distance, usually for seeing things far away. You may need glasses for reading or close work.
  • Multifocal lenses. These lenses have different zones set for near, intermediate, and far vision. They are designed to reduce your need for glasses after surgery.
  • Toric lenses. These are for people who have astigmatism, which is caused by an irregularly shaped cornea. Toric lenses correct astigmatism as well as short or long-sightedness.
  • Extended depth of focus (EDOF) lenses. These lenses provide a continuous range of vision from far to intermediate distances. They can be an alternative to multifocal lenses.

How a lens is chosen

The choice of lens depends on your eye health, lifestyle, and what you hope to achieve with your vision.

  • Your eye's health. A thorough eye examination is needed to see which lens types are suitable for you. The presence of other eye conditions can influence the decision.
  • Your daily activities. Your surgeon will discuss your lifestyle. This includes how much you drive, use a computer, read, or take part in hobbies.
  • Your preference for glasses. Some people do not mind wearing glasses for certain tasks. Others prefer to be as independent from glasses as possible. This is an important consideration.

The right lens for you can only be determined after a full eye examination and a discussion with an ophthalmologist. The final recommendation will depend on a specialist's review of your individual case, reports, and recent eye scans.
