Cataract
Cataract Surgery in India - Things to Know Before You Book
Cataract surgery is a common procedure to restore vision. This short explains what the operation involves and what you should know before proceeding.
What happens during cataract surgery
- A cloudy lens. A cataract is a clouding of the natural lens inside your eye, which makes vision blurry. Surgery is the only way to remove it.
- Lens removal. The surgeon makes a tiny incision in the eye to remove the clouded lens. This is usually done using ultrasound energy to break up the lens first.
- New lens implant. An artificial intraocular lens (IOL) is then inserted through the same incision to replace the natural lens and restore clear vision.
- A quick procedure. The surgery is typically performed as a day-case procedure under local anaesthetic. You can usually go home the same day.
Choosing an intraocular lens (IOL)
The new lens inserted into your eye is called an intraocular lens, or IOL. There are several types available.
- Monofocal lenses. These are the standard type of lens. They are set to provide clear vision at one specific distance, usually for seeing far away.
- Multifocal lenses. These lenses can provide clear vision at multiple distances, potentially reducing the need for glasses after surgery.
- Toric lenses. If you have astigmatism, a toric lens can be used to correct it at the same time as the cataract is removed.
- The right choice. The best lens for you depends on your lifestyle, your visual needs, and the overall health of your eyes.
What to expect after the procedure
- Medicated eye drops. You will be prescribed eye drops to prevent infection and reduce inflammation. It is important to use these exactly as directed.
- Protecting your eye. You may need to wear an eye shield, especially at night, to avoid rubbing or accidentally pressing on the eye as it heals.
- Follow-up visits. Your surgeon will schedule follow-up appointments to check on your recovery and the position of the new lens.
- Activity restrictions. For a few weeks, you may be advised to avoid strenuous activities, heavy lifting, and swimming to allow the eye to heal properly.
The suitability of any procedure or lens type depends on your individual case. An ophthalmologist can give you a full assessment after reviewing your medical history, eye examination results, and recent reports.
