Cataract Surgery

Cataract Surgery in India - What Patients Should Know Before Treatment?

Cataract surgery is a common and safe procedure to restore vision. This short explains what the surgery involves and the lens options available.

The procedure

Cataract surgery removes the eye's cloudy natural lens and replaces it with a clear artificial one.

  • A small incision. The surgeon makes a tiny cut in the eye to access the lens.
  • Removing the cataract. A small probe uses ultrasound waves to break up the cloudy lens, which is then removed.
  • Inserting the new lens. A new, clear artificial lens, called an intraocular lens (IOL), is folded and inserted. It then unfolds into place.
  • Local anaesthetic. The procedure is usually performed under local anaesthetic using eye drops, so you are awake but feel no pain.

Choosing an intraocular lens (IOL)

There are several types of IOL. The best one for you depends on your vision needs and lifestyle.

  • Monofocal lenses. These are the standard type. They are set for one distance, usually far vision. You will likely need reading glasses for close work.
  • Multifocal lenses. These have different zones for near, intermediate, and far vision. They can reduce your dependence on glasses.
  • Toric lenses. These are designed for people with astigmatism. They correct the shape of the cornea to provide clearer vision.
  • The right choice. Your surgeon will discuss the benefits of each lens type based on the health of your eyes and your personal preferences.

Recovery and aftercare

  • Immediately after. Your eye may be covered with a patch or shield. Your vision may be blurry at first, but it should improve over a few days.
  • Eye drops. You will be given eye drops to prevent infection and reduce inflammation. It is important to use them as prescribed.
  • Rest and activity. You should avoid strenuous activity, heavy lifting, and swimming for a few weeks. It is also important not to rub your eye.
  • Follow-up appointments. You will need to attend follow-up appointments to allow your surgeon to monitor your healing and check your vision.

The suitability of cataract surgery and the choice of lens depends on your individual case. A final decision can only be made after an ophthalmologist has reviewed your medical reports and examined your eyes.
