Flying After Heart Surgery in India - When Can International Patients Travel?

Many patients ask when they can fly home after heart surgery. This short explains the general advice and the factors that influence your surgeon's decision.

When can you fly after heart surgery?

The timing of your return flight depends on the type of surgery you had and how well you are recovering.

  • General waiting period. Most patients are advised to wait at least 10 to 14 days after major heart surgery, such as a bypass or valve replacement, before flying.
  • Less invasive procedures. The wait may be shorter for procedures like angioplasty or stenting. Your surgeon will provide specific advice for your situation.
  • Airline requirements. Airlines may have their own rules for passengers who have recently had surgery. They may require a 'fit to fly' certificate from your doctor.

What are the risks of flying too soon?

Flying involves changes in air pressure and lower oxygen levels, which can pose risks while your body is healing.

  • Blood clots. Sitting for long periods increases the risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Your team will advise on precautions like compression stockings and in-seat exercises.
  • Cabin pressure. Changes in air pressure can cause gases in the body to expand. This is a particular concern if you have had recent chest surgery.
  • Lower oxygen levels. The air in an aircraft cabin has slightly less oxygen. This can put extra strain on a heart and lungs that are still recovering from surgery.

The decision on when it is safe for you to travel by air is made on a case-by-case basis. Your fitness to fly can only be confirmed by your treating cardiac surgeon after a full evaluation of your recovery, medical reports, and recent tests.
