About Hodgkin's lymphoma

• A type of cancer. It begins in the lymphocytes, which are a type of white blood cell in your immune system.
• The lymphatic system. This network of tissues and organs includes your lymph nodes, spleen and bone marrow. Hodgkin's lymphoma causes abnormal cells to multiply in this system.
• Exact cause is unknown. It is not clear what triggers the changes in the cells that lead to the condition. However, doctors have identified factors that can increase the risk.

Known risk factors

Having one or more risk factors does not mean you will get the condition. Many people with Hodgkin's lymphoma have no known risk factors.

• Age. It is most common in people aged between 20 and 40, and in those over 55.
• Past infection. A history of infectious mononucleosis, which is caused by the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), is linked to a higher risk.
• A weakened immune system. This can be due to an inherited condition, a disease like HIV, or from taking certain drugs after an organ transplant.
• Family history. Having a close relative, such as a parent or sibling, with the condition can slightly increase your risk. This link is not strong.

What is not a cause

• Hodgkin's lymphoma is not contagious. You cannot catch it from another person.
• There is no clear link between the condition and lifestyle factors like diet or exposure to most chemicals.
• It is not caused by minor injuries or trauma.
