How to Choose the Right Hospital & Colorectal Cancer Surgeon in India

Where you have colorectal cancer surgery matters as much as the decision to have it. This short walks through what to verify before you commit to a hospital or a surgeon in India.

What to look for in the surgeon

• Specialist training. A surgical oncologist or a dedicated colorectal surgeon, not a general surgeon who occasionally operates on the colon.
• Case volume. Ask how many colorectal resections they perform each year. High-volume surgeons consistently report better outcomes.
• Technique. Experience with laparoscopic and robotic resection, and with sphincter-preserving surgery for low rectal tumours.
• Willingness to review first. A good surgeon will read your scans and biopsy report and give an honest opinion before you book a flight.

What to look for in the hospital

• A real cancer programme. A multidisciplinary tumour board that reviews each case, rather than a single surgeon deciding alone.
• On-site support. Pathology, interventional radiology, medical oncology, radiotherapy and trained stoma care under one roof.
• Accreditation. NABH or JCI accreditation as a baseline standard of care.
• An itemised estimate. A written cost breakdown before you travel, including what happens if you need extra days in hospital.

Questions worth asking before you decide

• Is my tumour likely to need chemotherapy or radiotherapy before surgery?
• Will I need a stoma, and if so, is it temporary or permanent?
• How many nights in hospital, and how long before I can fly home?
• Who follows me up once I am back in my own country?
