Keratoconus
Keratoconus Treatment in India - Symptoms, Options and Cost Explained
Keratoconus is a progressive eye condition where the cornea weakens and changes shape. This short explains what it is and the common approaches to treatment.
What is keratoconus
- A change in shape. Keratoconus causes the cornea, the clear front part of the eye, to thin and bulge outwards into a cone shape.
- Blurred vision. This change in shape distorts light entering the eye, leading to blurred and distorted vision.
- It is progressive. The condition usually starts in the teenage years and can progress into a person's 30s or 40s.
- Affects both eyes. It typically affects both eyes, though often one eye is more severely affected than the other.
How is keratoconus treated
Treatment aims to slow the progression of the condition and improve vision.
- Early stages. In the early stages, vision can be corrected with glasses or soft contact lenses.
- Rigid lenses. As the condition progresses, rigid gas permeable (RGP) or scleral lenses may be needed to correct vision.
- Corneal cross-linking. Also known as C3R, this procedure uses UV light and vitamin B drops to strengthen the cornea and halt progression. It does not reverse existing changes.
- Corneal ring segments. INTACS are small plastic rings inserted into the cornea to flatten it, which can improve vision. They can be removed or replaced.
- Corneal transplant. In advanced cases with severe scarring or where other treatments are not effective, a partial or full corneal transplant may be considered.
What factors affect the cost
The cost of treatment is not fixed and depends on several factors.
- The procedure. The specific treatment recommended for you is the biggest factor. A corneal transplant is more complex and costly than corneal cross-linking.
- The technology. The type of laser or equipment used, for example in a femtosecond laser-assisted procedure, can influence the price.
- Hospital choice. The choice of hospital and its location in India can affect the overall cost.
- Surgeon's experience. The fees of the specialist surgeon are another component of the total cost.
The suitability of any treatment depends on your individual case. A final decision can only be made after a specialist has reviewed your medical reports and recent eye scans.
