What happens during an initial consultation

A urologist will first assess your general health and symptoms.

• Medical history. The specialist will ask about your symptoms, diet, fluid intake, and any family history of kidney stones.
• Symptom review. You will be asked to describe your pain, its location, and any changes in urination, such as colour or frequency.
• Physical examination. The doctor may check for tenderness in your back or abdomen, which can indicate the location of the kidney or stone.

Common tests to diagnose kidney stones

Several tests help a specialist understand the size, location, and type of stone, which guides treatment.

• Urine tests. A urine sample can be checked for blood, crystals, and signs of infection. A 24-hour collection may be requested to analyse its composition.
• Blood tests. These can show how well your kidneys are functioning and check for high levels of substances that form stones, like calcium or uric acid.
• Imaging scans. A non-contrast CT scan is a very common and accurate way to see stones. An ultrasound or X-ray may also be used.
• Stone analysis. If you pass a stone, it can be analysed in a laboratory to determine its type. This helps in planning how to prevent future stones.
