Pancreatic Cancer
Pancreatic Cancer Surgery in India - How to Choose the Right Surgeon?
Choosing a surgeon is an important step in your treatment journey. This short explains some of the factors you may wish to consider when selecting a specialist for advanced pancreatic cancer.
The surgeon's experience
A surgeon's background and focus are important considerations.
- Specialist focus. Does the surgeon specialise in cancers of the pancreas, liver, and biliary system? This area of surgery is known as hepato-pancreato-biliary, or HPB, surgery.
- Volume of cases. A surgeon at a high-volume centre is likely to have more experience with complex cases. They may be more familiar with managing potential complications.
- Surgical approach. You can ask if they perform minimally invasive surgery, such as laparoscopic or robotic surgery. The suitability of this approach depends on the individual case.
- Team-based care. Cancer care is a team effort. The surgeon works with medical oncologists, radiologists, and other specialists to plan and deliver your treatment.
The hospital and its resources
The hospital where your surgery takes place plays a key role in your care.
- Specialist centre. Is the hospital a dedicated cancer centre or a multi-speciality hospital with a strong oncology department? Both can provide excellent care.
- Intensive care. Advanced pancreatic surgery is a major operation. The hospital should have a modern intensive care unit (ICU) with staff experienced in post-operative care.
- Diagnostic support. Access to advanced imaging like high-resolution CT, MRI, and PET-CT scans is important for accurate staging and planning.
- Support services. Consider the availability of other services you may need, such as dietetics, physiotherapy, and pain management.
Making your decision
- Multidisciplinary review. Your case is usually discussed in a multidisciplinary team meeting, also called a tumour board. This brings together different specialists to agree on the best treatment plan for you.
- Second opinions. It is common to seek a second opinion. This can give you more information and help you feel more confident in your treatment plan.
- Clear communication. You should feel comfortable with the surgeon and their team. They should explain the procedure, its risks, and the expected recovery in a way you can understand.
The suitability of any treatment, and the choice of surgeon, depends on your specific medical condition. A final decision can only be made after a specialist has reviewed your medical reports and recent imaging.
