UroLift for Enlarged Prostate in India - Minimally Invasive BPH Treatment

This short explains the UroLift procedure. It is a minimally invasive option for treating the symptoms of an enlarged prostate, also known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).

What is the UroLift procedure?

UroLift is a treatment for the lower urinary tract symptoms caused by an enlarged prostate.

  • How it works. It uses small, permanent implants to lift and hold the enlarged prostate tissue out of the way. This stops the tissue from blocking the urethra.
  • No cutting or heating. Unlike many other prostate procedures, UroLift does not involve cutting, heating, or removing prostate tissue.
  • The goal. The aim is to relieve symptoms like a weak urinary stream, difficulty starting urination, or frequent urination, especially at night.
  • Preserving function. The procedure is designed to avoid the risk of new, permanent sexual dysfunction, which can be associated with other prostate treatments.

Who is a candidate for UroLift?

A urologist determines suitability for the UroLift procedure on a case-by-case basis.

  • Symptom relief. It is an option for men with bothersome urinary symptoms who wish to avoid more invasive surgery or long-term medication.
  • Prostate size. The procedure is usually suitable for men whose prostate is within a certain size range. Very large prostates may require a different approach.
  • Prostate shape. The presence of an obstructive middle part of the prostate, known as a median lobe, may mean UroLift is not the best option.
  • General health. Your overall health and medical history are also important factors in deciding the most appropriate treatment for you.

What does the procedure involve?

The procedure is usually performed as a day case under local anaesthetic or light sedation.

  • The device. A special delivery device is passed through the urethra to reach the prostate.
  • Placing implants. The urologist uses the device to place the small implants that hold the lobes of the prostate apart, opening the channel.
  • Recovery. Recovery is usually quick. Most men can return to normal activities within a few days, with fewer side effects than traditional surgery.

The suitability of any treatment depends on your individual condition and medical history. A final decision can only be made after a specialist has reviewed your case, including recent medical reports and imaging.
