Enlarged Prostate

UroLift vs Traditional Prostate Surgery in India - What’s the Difference?

This short explains the UroLift procedure for an enlarged prostate, also known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). It compares this minimally invasive option to other surgical treatments.

What the UroLift system is

UroLift is a treatment for the symptoms of an enlarged prostate. It is considered a minimally invasive procedure.

  • How it works. Small, permanent implants are used to lift and hold the enlarged prostate tissue away from the urethra. This relieves the pressure and allows urine to flow more easily.
  • No tissue removal. Unlike traditional surgery, the UroLift procedure does not involve cutting, heating or removing any prostate tissue.
  • The procedure. It is typically performed as a day-case procedure using a special delivery device passed through the urethra. It can be done under local or general anaesthesia.

UroLift compared to traditional surgery

The most common alternative surgery for an enlarged prostate is a transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP).

  • Recovery. Recovery after UroLift is often faster than with TURP. A urinary catheter is not always required, or may be in place for a shorter period.
  • Side effects. UroLift was designed to have a lower risk of sexual side effects, such as erectile dysfunction or problems with ejaculation, compared to more invasive surgeries.
  • Durability. TURP is generally considered a more permanent solution. A percentage of men who have the UroLift procedure may require a further procedure in the future.
  • Hospital stay. UroLift is usually a day-case procedure, while TURP may require a short stay in hospital for one or two nights.

Who may be suitable for UroLift

A urologist will determine if UroLift is an appropriate option for you.

  • Prostate size and shape. The procedure is generally for men whose prostate is within a certain size range. It may not be suitable for a very large prostate or one with a prominent middle lobe.
  • Patient priorities. It may be a good option for men who are concerned about the side effects of major surgery and wish to preserve sexual function.
  • Not for cancer. UroLift is a treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) only. It is not a treatment for prostate cancer.

The suitability of any treatment depends on your individual case. A final decision can only be made after a specialist urologist has reviewed your medical reports and recent imaging.
