Varicocele

Varicocele Embolization in India - How This Minimally Invasive Treatment Works?

Varicocele embolization is a non-surgical treatment for enlarged veins in the scrotum, known as varicoceles. This short explains the procedure and how it can relieve symptoms.

Understanding varicoceles

A varicocele is a network of enlarged veins within the scrotum, similar to a varicose vein in the leg.

  • Common symptoms. They may cause a dull ache, a heavy or dragging feeling, or be visible as a 'bag of worms'. Some varicoceles cause no symptoms at all.
  • Effect on fertility. In some men, varicoceles can be associated with reduced sperm quality and may be a factor in infertility.
  • Diagnosis. A varicocele is usually diagnosed during a physical examination. An ultrasound scan is often used to confirm the diagnosis.

The embolization procedure

Embolization is a minimally invasive technique that blocks the veins causing the varicocele.

  • Gaining access. A specialist inserts a very thin tube, called a catheter, into a vein, usually in your groin or neck.
  • Image guidance. Using X-ray imaging for guidance, the catheter is carefully navigated to the affected veins in the scrotum.
  • Blocking the vein. Tiny metal coils or a special liquid are passed through the catheter to block the faulty vein.
  • Rerouting blood flow. Blood can no longer flow through the blocked vein. It is redirected through other healthy veins, and the varicocele shrinks over time.

Recovery and expectations

  • A day procedure. Embolization is usually performed as a day case under local anaesthetic. You can typically go home the same day.
  • Returning to activity. You can usually return to normal, non-strenuous activities within one or two days. Heavy lifting should be avoided for about a week.
  • Possible discomfort. You may experience some mild pain or bruising, which can be managed with standard pain relief medication.

The suitability of any treatment depends on your individual circumstances. A final decision can only be made after a specialist has reviewed your medical reports and recent imaging.
