Ventricular Septal Defect

VSD Surgery in India - Ventricular Septal Defect Treatment Explained

A ventricular septal defect, or VSD, is a common congenital heart condition. This short explains what a VSD is and how surgery is used to correct it.

Understanding a ventricular septal defect

A VSD is a hole in the septum, the wall that separates the heart's two lower chambers, or ventricles.

  • How it affects the heart. The hole allows oxygen-rich blood to leak from the left ventricle to the right. This mixture forces the heart and lungs to work harder than they should.
  • Symptoms and diagnosis. Large VSDs can cause breathlessness, poor feeding in infants, and fatigue. A doctor can often hear a heart murmur and confirm the diagnosis with an echocardiogram.
  • When treatment is needed. Small defects may not cause problems and can sometimes close on their own. Larger defects that cause symptoms usually require surgical repair to prevent complications.

The surgical procedure

The goal of surgery is to close the hole in the ventricular septum, allowing blood to flow correctly through the heart.

  • Open-heart surgery. This is the standard approach. The surgeon works directly on the heart while a heart-lung machine takes over the work of circulating blood.
  • Closing the defect. The surgeon closes the hole either with stitches for small defects, or by sewing a special patch over larger ones. The patch material integrates with the heart tissue over time.
  • Catheter-based repair. For certain types of VSD, a less invasive procedure may be an option. A device is guided through a blood vessel to the heart to plug the hole.
  • Anaesthesia and care. The procedure is performed under general anaesthesia. Afterwards, the patient is monitored closely in an intensive care unit for several days.

Recovery and life after surgery

  • Hospital stay. A typical stay in hospital is between one and two weeks, but this can vary depending on the individual's recovery.
  • Follow-up care. You will need regular check-ups with a cardiologist to monitor your heart's function. This usually involves an echocardiogram.
  • Long-term outlook. The outcome after VSD repair is usually excellent. Most people go on to lead normal, active lives with no restrictions.

The suitability of any procedure depends on your specific medical condition, the size and location of the defect, and your overall health. A final decision can only be made after a specialist has reviewed your medical reports and recent imaging.
