When Can You Fly Home After Surgery in India? - Recovery Guide

Deciding when to fly home after an operation is an important part of your recovery plan. This short explains the general factors that your surgeon considers when advising you on a safe time to travel.

General timelines for flying after surgery

The time you need to wait before flying depends on the type of surgery you have had.

  • Minor surgery. For simple procedures, you may be able to fly within a day or two. This includes keyhole surgery or procedures on surface-level parts of the body.
  • Abdominal surgery. After surgery on the abdomen, you are usually advised to wait 4 to 5 days. For major open surgery, this may be extended to 10 days.
  • Chest or brain surgery. Flying is typically not recommended for at least 7 to 10 days after these major operations. This is to reduce risks related to changes in air pressure.
  • Joint replacements. After hip or knee replacement surgery, you may need to wait several weeks. The exact time depends on your recovery and mobility.

Factors that influence your travel date

  • Type of procedure. Minimally invasive (keyhole) surgery usually allows for a shorter recovery time than open surgery.
  • Your personal recovery. How well you are healing, your pain levels, and your mobility all play a part. Your surgeon will assess your progress before clearing you to fly.
  • Risk of blood clots. Long-haul flights increase the risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Your surgeon will assess this risk and may recommend precautions like compression stockings.
  • Airline requirements. Some airlines may have their own rules or require a 'fit to fly' certificate from a doctor, especially after recent major surgery.

Preparing for your flight home

Your surgical team can help you prepare for a comfortable and safe journey.

  • Request an aisle seat to make it easier to stand up and stretch regularly.
  • Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water during the flight, and avoid alcohol.
  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing.
  • Keep any necessary pain medication in your hand luggage.

The advice on this page is for general guidance only. The final decision on when it is safe for you to fly will be made by your specialist after a full review of your case, your recovery, and recent medical reports.
