What is a varicocele

A varicocele is a network of swollen veins in the scrotum, similar to a varicose vein in the leg.

• Appearance. It is often described as feeling like a 'bag of worms' and may not be visible when you are lying down.
• Location. It is more common on the left side, due to the anatomy of the veins in the body.
• Symptoms. Many varicoceles cause no symptoms. When they do, they can cause a dull ache or a feeling of heaviness in the scrotum.

This is a surgical procedure performed by a urologist to treat a varicocele by stopping blood flow through the enlarged veins.

• The technique. A surgeon uses a high-powered microscope to see the small veins and arteries clearly.
• The incision. A small cut, usually 2 to 3 centimetres long, is made in the lower groin area.
• The goal. The aim is to carefully tie off the enlarged veins, redirecting blood flow into normal veins.
• Preserving structures. Using a microscope helps the surgeon to identify and protect the testicular artery and lymphatic vessels.

Recovery and what to expect

• Hospital stay. This is usually performed as a day-case procedure, meaning you can often go home the same day.
• Pain management. Any discomfort is usually mild and can be managed with simple pain relief medication.
• Returning to activity. You may be advised to avoid strenuous activity and heavy lifting for a couple of weeks.
• Follow-up. A follow-up appointment is typically scheduled to check on your recovery.
