Laparoscopic Varicocelectomy in India - Robotic Varicocele Surgery Explained

A varicocele is a swelling of the veins in the scrotum. This short explains how a keyhole procedure called a laparoscopic varicocelectomy is performed to treat it.

What is a varicocele

A varicocele is an enlargement of the veins within the scrotum. It is similar to a varicose vein that you might see in a leg.

  • Common condition. They are a common cause of low sperm production and decreased sperm quality, which can be a factor in male infertility.
  • Symptoms. Most varicoceles cause no symptoms. When they do, you may feel a dull ache or a feeling of heaviness in the scrotum.
  • Diagnosis. A doctor can usually diagnose a varicocele with a physical exam. A scrotal ultrasound may also be used to confirm the diagnosis.

The laparoscopic procedure

This is a minimally invasive, or keyhole, procedure performed under general anaesthesia to repair the swollen veins.

  • Small incisions. The surgeon makes a few small cuts in your lower abdomen.
  • Using a laparoscope. A thin tube with a camera on the end is inserted through one cut. This allows the surgeon to see the area clearly on a monitor.
  • Closing the veins. The surgeon uses tiny instruments to find the swollen veins and then seals them using small clips or heat.
  • Robotic assistance. The procedure can also be performed with robotic assistance. This may offer the surgeon greater precision and control.

Recovery and what to expect

  • Hospital stay. This is often a day-case procedure, meaning you can usually go home the same day.
  • Returning to activities. You can typically return to a desk job within a few days. Strenuous activity and exercise should be avoided for about two weeks.
  • Pain management. You may have some mild pain or discomfort, which can be managed with simple painkillers.
  • Follow-up. A follow-up appointment is usually scheduled to check your recovery. Semen analysis may be done a few months later to check for improvements in sperm quality.

Whether a laparoscopic varicocelectomy is the right treatment for you depends on your individual case. The final decision rests on a specialist's review of your medical reports and recent imaging.
