Varicocele

Varicocele Surgery in India - Treatment Options for Varicocele and Male Infertility

A varicocele is a swelling of the veins in the scrotum. This short explains the main ways it can be treated if it is causing problems such as pain or affecting fertility.

When is treatment considered

Treatment is not always necessary. It is usually recommended if the varicocele is causing specific issues.

  • Pain or discomfort. A varicocele can cause a dull, aching pain or a feeling of heaviness in the scrotum.
  • Testicular atrophy. The affected testicle may shrink. Treating the varicocele can sometimes help the testicle return to its normal size.
  • Infertility issues. Varicoceles can raise the temperature in the scrotum, which may affect sperm production and quality. Repairing it can improve semen parameters.

Surgical treatment options

Surgery involves tying off the swollen veins to redirect blood flow to healthy veins. This is usually done under general anaesthesia.

  • Microscopic varicocelectomy. The surgeon uses a high-powered microscope to see and tie off the affected veins through a small incision in the groin. This technique helps to protect nearby arteries and lymphatic vessels.
  • Laparoscopic varicocelectomy. This is a keyhole procedure. The surgeon makes small incisions in the abdomen and uses a camera to guide instruments to clip the veins.
  • Open varicocelectomy. This traditional approach involves a single, slightly larger incision in the groin or abdomen to access and tie off the veins.

Non-surgical treatment

  • Percutaneous embolisation. This is a less invasive procedure performed by an interventional radiologist. It is usually done with local anaesthesia.
  • Blocking the vein. A thin tube is inserted into a vein in the groin or neck. Using X-ray guidance, the radiologist guides it to the varicocele and releases tiny coils or a special fluid to block the vein.
  • Redirecting blood flow. Blocking the swollen vein causes blood to reroute through other, healthier pathways. The varicocele then shrinks and may disappear.

The most suitable treatment for a varicocele depends on your specific case, symptoms, and overall health. A final recommendation can only be made by a specialist after reviewing your medical reports and recent imaging.
