Tubal Ligation

Tubal Ligation Recovery in India - What to Expect After Surgery?

Tubal ligation is a permanent form of birth control, also known as female sterilisation. This short explains what you can generally expect during the recovery period after the procedure.

Immediately after the procedure

Most tubal ligations are performed as day-case procedures, meaning you can usually go home the same day.

  • Observation period. You will be monitored in a recovery area for a few hours as the anaesthesia wears off.
  • Common symptoms. It is normal to feel some abdominal cramping, bloating, or fatigue. If you had laparoscopic surgery, you may also have some shoulder pain from the gas used.
  • Pain relief. Your team will provide medication to manage any discomfort. This can be continued at home as needed.
  • Going home. You will need a responsible adult to accompany you home and stay with you for the first 24 hours.

The first week of recovery

Your focus during the first few days should be on rest and allowing your body to heal.

  • Rest and activity. Plan to rest for at least one to two days. Most people can return to office work and light activities within a week.
  • Incision care. You will be given instructions on how to care for your small incisions. This usually involves keeping them clean and dry.
  • Physical restrictions. Avoid strenuous exercise, heavy lifting, and swimming for one to two weeks, or as advised by your surgeon.
  • Driving. You should not drive for at least 48 hours after the procedure, and not until you can make an emergency stop without pain.

Longer-term expectations

  • Menstrual periods. Tubal ligation does not affect your hormones or your menstrual cycle. Your periods should continue as normal.
  • Sexual activity. You can usually resume sexual activity when you feel comfortable, which is often after about a week. The procedure does not affect libido or sexual function.
  • Birth control. Tubal ligation is effective immediately. You do not need to use another form of contraception.
  • Follow-up. You may have a follow-up appointment scheduled a few weeks after your surgery to check that you are healing well.

Every patient's recovery is different. The specific advice and timeline for your recovery can only be decided by a specialist after a full review of your individual case and medical reports.
