Tubal Ligation
Tubal Ligation Surgery in India - Is It Right for You?
Tubal ligation is a surgical procedure for permanent female contraception, also known as female sterilisation. This short explains what the operation involves and its key considerations.
What is tubal ligation
Tubal ligation is a permanent method of contraception for women.
- How it works. The procedure involves blocking, cutting or sealing the fallopian tubes. This prevents an egg from travelling from the ovary to the uterus.
- A permanent choice. It is intended to be a permanent procedure. You should be certain that you do not want to become pregnant in the future.
- Surgical methods. It is usually performed using laparoscopy (keyhole surgery). This involves small incisions in the abdomen.
- Not easily reversed. While reversal surgery is sometimes possible, it is a complex operation and is not always successful. Tubal ligation should be considered irreversible.
The procedure and recovery
The operation is usually performed under general anaesthesia.
- Hospital stay. It is often done as a day-case procedure, meaning you can go home the same day. Sometimes an overnight stay may be recommended.
- Recovery period. You can expect some discomfort and bloating for a few days. Most people can return to normal activities within a week or two.
- Contraception. You may need to continue using contraception until your next period to be fully protected against pregnancy. The procedure does not protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
- No hormonal change. Tubal ligation does not affect your hormones or your menstrual cycle. Your periods will continue as normal.
Important considerations
- Is this the right choice for you? You must be certain that your family is complete and you do not wish to have children in the future.
- What are the alternatives? Other long-acting reversible contraceptives are available. It is important to discuss all options with a specialist.
- Your age and personal situation are key factors. A gynaecologist will discuss your individual circumstances with you.
The suitability of any procedure depends on your individual case. A final decision can only be made after a specialist has reviewed your medical history, reports, and any recent imaging.
