Heart Valve Disease
Heart Valve Replacement Recovery in India - What to Expect After Surgery?
After a heart valve replacement, recovery is a gradual process. This short explains the typical timeline, from your immediate post-operative care in the hospital to your return to daily activities.
Your recovery in hospital
The first phase of your recovery takes place in the hospital.
- Intensive care. You will usually spend the first day or two in an intensive care unit (ICU). Here, staff can monitor your heart, blood pressure, and breathing very closely.
- Hospital ward. Once your condition is stable, you will be moved to a regular hospital ward. The typical hospital stay after this surgery is around one week.
- Pain control. It is normal to have some pain and discomfort around your chest wound. This is managed with pain relief medication to help you rest and move.
- Early movement. The care team will help you to start sitting up and walking. This is important to help your recovery and prevent complications like chest infections.
The first few weeks at home
Once you are discharged, your recovery continues at home for several weeks.
- Wound care. You will receive instructions on how to care for your incision. It is important to keep it clean and dry and watch for any signs of infection.
- Rest and activity. You will feel tired, so getting enough rest is important. You should aim for short, regular walks, but avoid lifting, pushing, or pulling heavy objects for about six to eight weeks.
- Driving. You usually cannot drive for at least six weeks after surgery. Your surgeon will advise when it is safe for you to start again.
- Emotional health. It is common to feel emotional or have mood swings after major surgery. This usually improves as you get stronger and more active.
Longer-term recovery and lifestyle
- Cardiac rehabilitation. Your doctor may recommend a cardiac rehabilitation programme. This is a supervised programme of exercise and education to help you recover and improve your heart health.
- Returning to work. Most people can return to a desk job after about two months. If your job is physically demanding, you may need to wait longer. This is decided case by case.
- Follow-up care. You will have regular follow-up appointments with your cardiac team. These are important to monitor your progress and the function of your new heart valve.
The exact recovery timeline and post-operative instructions can vary from person to person. Your specific care plan can only be determined by a specialist after a full evaluation of your medical reports and recent imaging.
