During an arrhythmia, the heart may not be able to pump enough blood to the body. This device uses electrical pulses to prompt the heart to beat at a normal rate.

This may cause symptoms such as fatigue, shortness of breath or fainting. A pacemaker can relieve some arrhythmia symptoms, such as fatigue and fainting. A heart pacemaker helps a person who has abnormal heart rhythms resume a more active lifestyle.

Procedure – The artificial heart pacemaker system consists of one or two electrodes and a battery unit. The electrodes wires that are insulated nearly to their tips are inserted into a vein located under your collarbone. The pacemaker's generator sends the electrical pulses that correct or set your heart rhythm.
A computer chip figures out what types of electrical pulses to send to the heart and when those pulses are needed.
To do this, the computer chip uses the information it receives from the wires connected to the heart. It also may use information from sensors in the wires that detect your movement, blood temperature, breathing, or other factors that indicate your level of physical activity.
In the heart pacemaker implant surgery the area under the patient's collarbone is numbed, a small incision is made and a pocket is fashioned in the tissue overlying the muscle. The lead is placed in the right atrium or the right ventricle with the visual guidance of x-rays. The tip of the lead is then attached to the inner surface of the heart by small tines or with a small screw.
If there is more than one lead, the process is repeated.
The other end of the lead(s) is then connected to the pacemaker chamber, which is then placed under the skin. As there are no nerve ending inside the blood vessels and the heart, the patient usually does not feel the placement of the lead(s). Occasionally in heart pacemaker implant surgery, the leads are placed on the outer surface of the heart, a process called epicardial implantation.
When leads are placed in this manner, the chest wall is opened surgically.
The lead or leads are placed onto the heart surface, and the pacemaker chamber is implanted underneath the skin in the upper abdomen. Because epicardial implantation is more difficult and requires more extensive surgery, this procedure is used when leads cannot be placed inside the heart via the blood vessels.
Closing the incision with sutures completes the heart pacemaker implant surgery. Patients are given antibiotics to prevent possible infection, and sent home with pain medications to alleviate post-surgical pain at the incision site.

Patients should also confirm the expected hospital stay, attendant needs, visa documents, airport transfers, accommodation near the hospital, payment inclusions, and what may change if extra tests or a longer stay are required.
Follow-up planning should be discussed before travel. Ask what warning signs need urgent attention, when flying is usually reviewed, how medicines or dressings will be managed, and how the treating team will coordinate after the patient returns home.
